The skin is the soft outer covering of vertebrates. In human beings, it is the largest organ in the integumentary system . The skin has many essential functions, such as protection from UV radiation and temperature loss. Skin also helps to prevents entry of microorganisms and water loss through evaporation. There are several layers of the skin including epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue.
It's composed of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.
The epidermis is the outermost section of the skin. The main function of the epidermis is to provide a barrier between the body and external environment. It also prevents water loss from the body. The deepest layer of the epidermis is the stratum basale, which contains keratinocytes . These cells are constantly dividing as they migrate from the stratum basale to the topmost layers of the epidermis. As they become part of the outermost layer, they are replaced by new cells which gradually move up.
The cells in the epidermis contain a hard protein called keratin that helps retain water and protect itself from the harsh external environment.
The dermis is a layer of thick connective tissue located under the epidermis. It contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, nerve endings and various structures including hair follicles, sweat glands and sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands produce sebum, an oily substance that lubricates the skin to prevent dryness caused by evaporation of water.
The dermis contains two types of sensory receptors responsible for perceptual awareness of pain, touch and temperature. These receptors are free nerve endings and encapsulated nerve endings.
The hypodermis is a layer of subcutaneous tissue located under the dermis . The main functions of the hypodermis are to support the skin and store fat burned during periods of starvation.
A key function of the skin is to protect the body against pathogens and harmful stimuli which can cause tissue damage. For example, the skin protects against entry of microorganisms, water loss through evaporation, thermal injury from sunlight and ultraviolet radiation.
